What Will You Accomplish This Year?

What do you want to improve in 2009? Whatever it is, I'm sure we can help!

Achieve True Health for You and Your Family?
Mary Lou's popular and oh-so-informative Immunization Options and Herbs for Kids Classes are always a great start. Immunization Options is January 14 and Herbs for Kids is March 4. $30 per class. Also check out her free class on Saturday, January 10 at our Family Health Day and read her article on Safe Cold Remedies below.

Fluoride and Your Family (small fee to cover costs)

Save Money? Be More Organized?
Try our Menu Planning for Families Class on February 11. $10 plus tax. Menu planning helps you save money on groceries, as well as spare those last minute "oh no, I didn't defrost anything" unplanned expenses. Even if you don't think you can make or stick to a plan, you can! Says Danielle Morris,

“Menu planning is something that has always intrigued yet intimidated me. I felt that I didn’t have the organizational skills necessary to get a menu planned and that I didn’t have the discipline to stick to it. After sitting down with Amylee for a while, I came away with both the skills and the confidence I needed and I was excited to impliment what I had learned. I’ve been menu planning for about nine months, and I feel lost if something happens that I can’t make up a plan. It saves me time, money, and the worry that I’m not feeding my family and well as I could.”

Get Fit?
Check out our Fitness for the Busy Mom class on January 28. Great for dads, too. Workout at home without daycare, expensive gym fees or equipment! This hour and a half condensed class will cover ways to include fitness and health in your hectic days. Taught by a certified personal trainer, topics will include: workout design and instruction, healthy eating guidelines and an actual workout tailored to a busy schedule. $15 plus tax.

Heatherlee's Postnatal Yoga Workshop Series is the last Monday of each month. Sessions can work alone or all together to help you create a special time to nourish the new mother and encourage the body to tone and come together after opening for pregnancy and childbirth. Throughout the series, you will learn how to create and maintain your own postnatal yoga home practice. Just $10 each! See calendar for each session's details.

Get More Sleep?
Try Get Your Baby to Sleep! with special guest speaker Karen Pollack on January 23rd. $30 per couple/family. If you are interested in learning what is getting between your young child and a good night’s rest, then join us for this informative seminar. Karen will be defining her top ten ‘foundation elements’ necessary for productive and restorative sleep. She will discuss common mistakes parents (often unknowingly) make along with an overview of various ‘sleep training’ techniques. Karen has helped hundreds of parents across the country help their babies develop good sleep habits. Come with your questions and let Karen help you help your baby sleep!

Safe Remedies for Childhood Colds
by Mary Lou Singleton

Winter has arrived, bringing with it the inevitable colds and coughs of safe remedies for childhood coldschildhood. As parents, it can be very difficult to watch our children suffer with the sniffles, sneezing, fevers, and nighttime hacking that accompany childhood respiratory illnesses. Many parents want to give their children medications to relieve these symptoms and reach for over-the-counter decongestants, antihistamines, and cough suppressants to help their little ones rest and feel better. Unfortunately, these medications which are relatively benign to adults can cause major health complications in children. According to the CDC, last year over 7000 children in the U.S. were admitted to emergency rooms for serious reactions to over-the-counter cold and cough medicine. The CDC has issued a warning to parents stating that cold medicine should not be given to children under the age of 11, with a special emphasis on avoiding these drugs when children are under the age of two.

Fortunately, the natural world offers many safe and gentle medicinal plants that we can use to help our children rest and recover from childhood respiratory infections. While these herbs won't suppress symptoms the way that drugs do, they will help children get relief from the worst of their symptoms while boosting the body's immune response. With a little bit of support and planning, parents can be ready for the cough and cold season with a medicine kit full of supportive herbs for children's health.

One readily available herb that parents can keep on hand is chamomile. Warm chamomile tea helps calm children and get them to sleep. Chamomile also has mucous dissolving properties that relieve sniffling and runny noses. Chamomile kills viruses and pathogenic bacteria, while supporting the immune and nervous systems. It will also improve digestion and contains electrolytes for rehydration. Children usually like the taste of this mild herb. They'll like it even better if you add a bit of honey, which has its own medicinal properties.

Another herb that should be in every parent's medicine cabinet is goldenrod. Goldenrod tea or tincture works wonders to relieve nasal congestion and help unplug stuffy noses. Think of this herb when your child's nose just won't stop running. A small cup of tea or 15 drops of the tincture every hour will help your child breathe more easily. Like chamomile, goldenrod has no potential toxicity and is safe for children under the age of two.

Literally hundreds of other plants will help soothe the symptoms of coughs and colds in children. Many of these herbs may already be growing in your yard or neighborhood. Learning how to gather, prepare, and use medicinal plants leads to a greater sense of self-sufficiency as well as lower family health care costs. If your are interested in attaining more information on treating coughs and colds with natural medicine, please come to Inspired's Family Health Day for a free talk on the subject. If you are ready for more intensive study, consider attending the all-day Pediatric Herbalism Workshop for parents and professionals on February 21, where you will learn how to treat everything from head colds to head lice safely with herbal medicine.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR TWO TO FIVE YEAR OLD
Thursday, January 8, 6-8pm

This session covers an introduction to child development.  Learn about parenting to your child’s temperament, dealing with a range of emotions and strengthening your connection with your child. During this age, parents are challenged to define their authority and discipline style. We will discuss a balanced approach to setting limits with respect and love.

UNCONDITIONAL PARENTING
Thursdays, February 12 and 19, 6-8pm

This two session workshop explores the material presented in a book by Alfie Kohn. We will explore the use of rewards and punishments as a parenting style. Kohn contends that common parenting practices focus too much on controlling children’s behavior and not enough on nurturing a loving relationship. We look at our long term goals for our children and come up with parenting strategies that support our children’s growth into responsible, caring people.
This workshop is designed for parents of children of all ages.
* This is a 2-session class

Get Your Year in Order: Mothers Acting Up 2009 Calendars are available!

The 2009 MAU calendar, The Moment, is dedicated to moments of personal change that shift the direction and purpose of our lives. Often these extraordinary moments are heralded by very ordinary tasks. They arrive -- when we're cradling babies, grocery shopping or bicycling -- and begin magically transforming us into passionate advocates.

The Moment is a weekly engagement calendar that also offers tools, information, weekly actions and most importantly, portraits of people who inspire our own activism – from the mom next door, to new moms, to Isabel Allende, Paul Hawken, Mukhtar Mai and Julie Chavez Rodriguez. This calendar and guide is a tribute to pivotal moments of change, designed to incite your own year of Moments!
