Thank you for all the advice!!! I took Mary Lou’s pediatric herbalism class about a year and a half ago and have treated my kids exclusively with herbs since then. We’ve never had a reason to go to a doctor. I’m going to see if any of these docs are on our insurance and go from there…. Angie

I’ve worked with Jeff McCollum who is an FNP at New Mexico Pediatrics and After Hour Pediatrics for all my kids, all their lives. We selectively vaccinate and Jeff has no problem with that. He respects that I’ve done my research and that it’s my choice and occasionally I ask his opinion about some so I understand where he’s coming from. I think most of the pediatricians in that practice are similarly-minded.

Dr. Crocetti with New Mexico Pediatrics has been very respectful of my wish to postpone vaccination (my child is 3). I’ve heard from others that he’s strongly encouraged them to fully vaccinate, but that hasn’t been my experience. He’s never given me any trouble about it – not once.

Hands on Health Care does not do vaccinations at all. They are a Family Practice with an MD – Dr. Meuli, a DO – Dr.Childers , and a Physician’s Assistant.

I had a similar experience as the previous poster with Dr. Bebe Han as far as vaccinations. He gave a brief spiel about the benefits of vax and the risks of choosing not to vax, but didn’t make me feel bad about it. My only concern with him is for women considering extended breastfeeding b/c he told me my 18 month old son was no longer getting any nutritional benefits from my breastmilk even though he did acknowledge the importance of the emotional bonding taking place. I’ve read enough that I knew better but for someone on the fence it might discourage them from continuing breastfeed.

If you have a Preferred Provider list I’d encourage you to call and check with the receptionist about their vaccination policies to save time. I heard about one place in Rio Rancho, can’t remember the name, where you have to sign something as a new patient saying you understand that there are no compromises allowed on vaccinating and you will follow the doctor’s orders.

Angie, I’m going to ask a few folks who may have more experiences to share to post here. Also, our Immunization Options class is tomorrow. Mary Lou can help you make your vax decisions and perhaps share her knowledge of pediatricians in town.

Bebe Care/Dr. Han has always worked with us to delay and selectively vax. They just recently asked us to sign a form saying we’ve been advised of the dangers of doing so, but they didn’t make us feel uncomfortable or anything. We’ve been there seven years, so it looked like a recent formality.

Dr. Kaufman does not vax, though he is not a pediatrician if that makes a difference for you.

There’s also Dr. Raul Griegos, who is also an MD. I think his office hours are limited, but am not sure. He is also a homeopath.

Hopefully others will have suggestions….

Laurel on And the Doula Makes Four - NY Times Article

The experience described in this article could not be more remote from my own experience with a doula, or stories I’ve heard of others’ experiences. My understanding, supported by my own experience and those of others in my circle, is that a doula supports a mother through the labor process and advocates (to the extent it is possible) for the choices made by the mother–whatever those choices may be. The article mentions doulas who limit their practice at the outset to women who seek to have a natural birth. This seems wholly legitimate to me, and seems completely distinct from the example given at the beginning of the article of a doula who walked out because the woman chose the epidural. I suspect that example was either (1) an anomaly, or (2) a more complex a story than what was relayed by the mother. At any rate, I think the article could have done more to distinguish between those doulas who would "walk out" because medical interventions had been chosen, and those who make a professional and ideological commitment to natural birth for very important and well-supported reasons. The article exploited the idea that doulas pursue their commitment in a manner that is "doctrinaire," without doing much to examine the doctrines doulas and midwives challenge by definition. By this I mean long-established doctrines announcing generally that babies are "delivered" by people other than the mother, and that such "delivery" always or typically requires medical interventions.

One more point: As a Southern woman, I am highly suspicious of the article’s conclusion–based, it seems, on statistics drawn from medical communities in ALABAMA and VIRGINIA–that doulas are routinely in conflict with health care professionals and hospital staff. This seems to lay the blame for the conflict at the feet of doulas in these places, with no consideration of whether the medical communities at issue have grown to accept doula practice and natural birth as legitimate approaches to a shared end. Without drawing a whole lot of baseless conclusions about Alabama and Virginia, I would say that based on my own experience researching the natural birth resources in Tennessee (where I might have given birth to my son had he come two weeks earlier than he did), there was a whole different set of expectations than we have here in New Mexico. Unfortunately, I think the Times article does more to undermine the stature of doula practice in those places, where doulas and natural birth are struggling to achieve acceptance, where a more even-handed approach might have celebrated the progress that doulas have made in bridging the gap between natural birth and the conventional medical approach. By my own choice, I had an unmedicated birth in the hospital setting, and was struck by the harmony achieved by the various participants in that experience, including my doula, nurse midwife, nurses, pediatric staff, and other hospital staff. With ever-increasing doula involvement nationwide (stats referenced in the article), I can only imagine that the "conflicts" described in the article will decrease as the idea takes root.

Thanks so much for sharing. I, too, wonder what happened to the lady in the article. Perhaps the doula didn’t show her true beliefs at first? But, as you said, perhaps she didn’t really know what to ask or consider. Great food for thought. Keep it coming!

Wow! That was so unlike my experience. As when hiring any personal assistant, whether a life coach, therapist or trainer I recommend thoroughly interviewing your doula to make sure you are on the same page on what kind of birth you want to have. My family and I did that and are so happy with our outcome. I’m so grateful for my doula for so many things, the advice, the comfort and she never interfered with the hospital staff. In fact, because my doula stayed with me, she was there when the baby came since the nurse barely made it in the room to catch the baby and the midwife was nowhere in the room. It would have been a very scary episode for my husband and I if she wasn’t there.

So what happened in NY? Maybe that mother went with a doula just because she heard about it from friends but didn’t do her research on a doula with a personality she would be comfortable with .

Please respond! Did any of you have negative doula experiences? Are these concerns legitimate? Prevalent?
