Thanks for the info. The chamomile seems to really help fussiness and he likes to drink it too. Does the strength of the brewed tea matter?

What about cinnamon tea for colds? Someone recommended that but I didn’t know if it was ok for babies.

Hello Patti!

I’m constantly impressed with the nurse practitioners and docs at After Hours Pediatrics. My kids have seen Jeff McCollum FNP all their lives and I really appreciate his even, steady approach and willingness to let me make my own informed decisions about their care. I’m a breastfeeding nut, 100% saavy, and he’s impressed me with his knowledge several times. There’s a nurse practitioner in their practice there at After Hours who is also an IBCLC (certified lactation consultant) and my kids have seen her once or twice–she’s really great and I totally trust her, I just CAN’T for the life of me remember her name (mama brain strikes again!). But she’s blonde and she’s an IBCLC. I know it says that on her business card if you go to the office and just check them out. Their number is 298-2505 and I’ve never had trouble getting a same-day appointment. Unfortunately that’s about the only pediatric office I’m really familiar with–mostly that’s because I’d never consider changing!

Good luck with the jaundice–I hope it resolves soon!

Cheers,

Lauren

Hi,

I am trying to find the names of a few breastfeeding savvy pediatricians in Albuquerque who can help in making a sound decision on treating breastmilk jaudice in a two and a half week old infant.

Can anyone offer some names of docs with solid reputations?

Thanks,

Hi, Jackie.

If you are nursing your baby on demand, you really can’t "displace" breastmilk with chamommile. Your baby will absorb the chamommile tea quickly, her/his body won’t treat it as a food. Just nurse the baby every time you get hunger cues and you don’t need to worry about displacing calories with tea.

I recommend 1 to 2 ounces of chamommile tea up to 5 times a day for a fussy or congested baby. Chewing on the teabag seems like a bad idea. As AmyLee mentioned, the baby could break through the teabag and end up choking on the flowers. You could soak washcloths in chamommile and let a teething baby chew on those.

Good luck,

Mary Lou

I will direct this post to Mary Lou, but until then, I’d just remind you that a great way for him to get any herbal benefits are through YOUR breast milk. So be sure to drink lots of chamomile yourself. I’m not sure about the tea bag. Seems like little emerging teeth would rip right through it and you’d have pieces all in his mouth. I’m not sure if it’s Mary Lou who recommends this, but some babies really like chewing on a licorice stick (meaning the dried root of the plant). It’s a little sweet and great for gnawing!

My 5 1/2 month old is teething and needs some comfort especially at night so I have been giving him some camomile. But I’m not sure how much to give him. He is only breastfeeding and I don’t how much extra liquid to give him and when so not interfer with feedings. Also what about letting him chew on the tea bag?

I would without a doubt recommend Mary Lou. She does see patients and she has a lot of experience with asthma. Taking her class is a great way to help you on all health fronts. But if you need help now, you can call her at her office. 345-2922.

I’d love to find some resources on treating the symptoms of childhood asthma with herbs and natural remedies. Also, I’d love a recommendation of an herbalist (or whatever you call it) I could take my kiddo to. Our pediatrician has him on one inhaled-steroid (albuterol) and wants to recommend another (pulmocort) and I just really don’t want to go there without looking into other options! I plan to take Mary Lou’s herb class but it’s not until March…and little buddy is having a hard time breathing now.

Does Mary Lou see patients?

I had a similar experience as the previous poster with Dr. Bebe Han as far as vaccinations. He gave a brief spiel about the benefits of vax and the risks of choosing not to vax, but didn’t make me feel bad about it. My only concern with him is for women considering extended breastfeeding b/c he told me my 18 month old son was no longer getting any nutritional benefits from my breastmilk even though he did acknowledge the importance of the emotional bonding taking place. I’ve read enough that I knew better but for someone on the fence it might discourage them from continuing breastfeed.

If you have a Preferred Provider list I’d encourage you to call and check with the receptionist about their vaccination policies to save time. I heard about one place in Rio Rancho, can’t remember the name, where you have to sign something as a new patient saying you understand that there are no compromises allowed on vaccinating and you will follow the doctor’s orders.
